Hazel Bishop's Long Lasting Lipsick

It was during the Depression. The world seemed to be coming to an end - the worst financial crisis the world had ever seen. Yet, out there, someone was thinking of the future. Hazel Bishop had a dream of setting up her own successful business. And she had ideas! The lady had to end her studies because she had no money to pay for a higher degree. Her only asset was a bachelors degree in chemistry. This was enough, however. At the time the makeup market was sown up by large companies who blocked access to newcomers. Hazel could see no barriers. She set about experimenting with different ingredients for lipstick. The old joke of a man kissing a woman then going home to his wife who could see the smear of lipstick on his face was doing the rounds - a real "found out" joke. It was common knowledge at the time that bromo acids stained the lips, the drawback being that the acid peeled the top layer of skins off. Hazel searched for an additive which would preven...

Dogs Are Smart, Just Like Humans

Humans aren't that special. It was once thought that people were superior to chimpanzees because humans had feelings and showed love. We all know now that chimps do have these propensities. Other animals weren't even considered in the "advanced" creature stakes. Time has shown that many animals use tools to find food. Pets such as dogs tend to mimic their owners. They say you grow like your partner and if your companion is a dog then the dog copies you, and heaven forbid you copy the dog. So strong is this bond that dogs will actually give up food rewards to do what their owners do. Researchers had two groups of pet dogs. Their owners went on hands and knees and opened a sliding door with their heads and closed hands. One group of dogs was rewarded for opening the door. The other group was reward with food for not doing what their owners did. All dogs opened the door after their owners - foregoing the food reward. Clearly dogs learn like humans. They copy. Dogs ...

Men No Longer Have an Identity

It seems women are changing to fit into the new technical society.  Men, on the other had, see traditional values fall away and struggle for an identity.  The old 40 hour week is gone for ever.  Men in particular are working more hours, up to 65 hours a week.  They feel that they are always on call to go back to work.  There is nowhere to hide.  Mobile phones have moved the "work/finished-work" barrier right into the home.  Despite more women in the workforce, men feel that they have to work to leave women free to look after children. Men and women are living separate lives.  They are not communicating.  Even though couples share the same bed, men feel that they are left out and on their own.  They want to have quality time with the children.  With the mobile always ringing they don't get the chance. Mothers are so tied up with their children that they won't even consider taking a part-time job to free up more of their part...

People Choose Dogs That Look like them But What About Their Partners?

It's official! People choose dogs that look like themselves. In a research project subjects were asked to match pets with their owners. Owners of labradors, poodles or bull terriers were photographed. Questionnaires were filled in by non-dog owners and they matched owners with dog type correctly 60 percent of the time. I would take this further and say it is wrong to assume that opposites attract when it comes to human relationships. People do select partners of the same physical type as themselves. This can be seen particularly in older couples who have lived together a long time. Sure humans have a part of the brain that mimics others and living with a person would give a partner similar lines on their face for example. But when you walk around the shopping malls and look at families, similarities in body type can easily be seen in parents. Even if a European person marries an Asian, similar features can still be observed. This is also the case when there is an age difference...
