New Tasmanian Law Bans Barbecue Smoke - Un-Australian

New Tasmanian laws to ban smoke are a joke and out of touch with reality. While the rest of the world goes on its merry way it will have no positive effect. Diesel trucks pump tonnes of filth into the atmosphere and there is no legislation to stop them. Not only will the new rules stop gardeners from burning waste vegetation, barbecues will be monitored as well. Recently a new type of barbecue has been released called the "turbo" or "low'n'slow" which increases the flavor of meat by creating more smoke. Ban criteria are just pulled out of the air. Smoke should not be visible for more than 10 minutes continuously. A fireplace cannot give off smoke for longer than 30 seconds. How are you going to stop burning wood from constantly giving off smoke? Fines are extremely large - $1,600 for the first offence. This is bureaucracy gone mad. If you are having problems with a neighbor they can make your life hell by reporting you for every fire you light ...

Vegemite Beer Could be the New Product

Vegemite beer could be good for society. There is a myth about Vegemite. It is assumed by many Australians to be unique. This isn't the case. Marmite and Bovril are the same product. It is yeast residue, the stuff at the bottom of the container when you brew your own beer with a lot of salt added. Of course, the yeast is dormant and can still be activated. This is the case despite Vegemite spread being sterilized. The tasty "treat" is banned in Victorian prisons because it can be used to make an alcoholic concoction loosely called beer. Scientists actually made beer with Vegemite to prove that this is possible. Vegemite acted as a booster in the fermentation process. This made it possible for basic raw materials to be used to make beer. There is one proviso: some natural yeast has to be obtained from somewhere else. Yeast naturally occurs on the skin of fruit and berries, so it is easy to get.  Just get some flour and add water.  It will start fermentin...

A Useful New Brew Tester: brewPal

Brewing goes high-tech. Well at least it does for small breweries. There is nothing worse than gulping down a cool stubbie and getting a flat, foul tasting experience. This seldom happens, of course, due to testing of the product in its creation. Invisible Sentinel has made a fantastic new product that solves most of the problems. A tiny device like a pregnancy tester called  brewPal  fits comfortably into your hand.  It analyses a beer's DNA and shows only one of two findings: either the beer is clear, or it has a spoiling infection. When you exercise, lactic acid builds up in your body. This makes you feel tired. Excess lactic acid is also the cause of "off" beer. Unwanted bacteria produce the acid. Lactobacillus and Pediococcus are resistant to hops so they thrive in the brew. Oddly, some beers need these bacteria. Culturing beer in the lab was time-consuming, especially in the hunt for Lactos and Pedis . It takes a week. Small companies c...

Aboriginals Are Not Genetically Susceptible to Alcohol

Like the native Indians of North America, Australian Aboriginals have taken solace in alcohol. Since the Europeans arrived, discrimination has been part of their daily lives. Europeans immured in stratified society with strong class divisions treated Aboriginals as less than human. City white people have the same alcohol problems as Aboriginals, but society accepts this as normal. Many Australians of European descent believe that there is a genetics predisposition in Aboriginals. There is no foundation to this. When white people get drunk they fight, steal, and lose control. Aboriginal communities have alcohol prohibition supported by government legislation. If this was to be applied to white citizens there would be a public outcry. The current interference in unemployment payments to Aboriginals in the Northern Territory is definitely unlawful. This is why the board that polices human rights in Australia was suspended. Life is so frustrating for Australian Aboriginals that ...

Women Get into Beer

In the past if you took a lady out for a drink you would buy her a shandy or a white wine. Today, she is likely to ask for a beer. They don't just like the stuff, they make it. The number of female brewers is increasing daily. Brewing is much like cooking. Women find it interesting to vary the recipe and taste the subtle difference. It is an extention of cooking. They may cook but they brew as well. Even Brewing companies are targeting both sexes for their "craft" beer. The female interest started at beer festivals where a few women ventured. Today 40 per cent of people attending will probably be female. Beer-interested women have formed a mutual support club - the Pink Boots Society. Some are so good they sell their craft beer. http://www.adventure--australia.blogspot.com/ http://www.tysaustralia.blogspot.com/ http://www.feeds.feedburner.com/AdventureAustralia http://www.technorati.com/blogs/ http://adventure--australia.blogspot.com . . . . ...

Expensive Polar Beer

The world revolves around beer. Some people think so. There are beer connoisseurs out there. Some time ago the Sea Shepherd ship fighting against Japanese whaling brought back polar ice which was made into beer. It was auctioned to raise money for "Operation No Compromise" for the grand sum of $8,000. Beers really getting a run lately. This is a challenge to "space" beer which is to be made for space flights and will take into account gravity and its effect on the carbon dioxide in the beer as well as viscosity. Why the interest in beer? It is so easy to make - just some malt barley, water and yeast. That's all there is to it. I suppose wine is even simpler. All you need is fruit from the grape vine. As humans we always like to play with our food - in this case, drink. http://www.adventure--australia.blogspot.com/ http://www.tysaustralia.blogspot.com/ http://www.feeds.feedburner.com/AdventureAustralia http://www.technorati.com/blogs/http://adventure--australia.b...

Australia Makes Beer for Space

Australians love their beer - really love it. So when going into space it is wise to get "space certified" beer while on board. Saber Astronautics Australia is working with 4 Pines Brewing Company to get their beer registered as satisfactory for space. The beer will be tested in low gravity by weightless parabolas. Taste and drinkability are paramount. In a low gravity environment human taste is reduced in sensitivity. The way carbonated liquid responds is also an issue. Oddly the Australian brew being tested is not the usual lager. It is stout. This has more flavor. Gas will float around in the liquid in the stomach being released in what is called a wet burp. The beer will be expensive because of the limited market. Space beer has been made by the Japanese using barley seeds grown in the International Space Station, but that was for earthly consumption. http://www.adventure--australia.blogspot.com/ http://www.tysaustralia.blogspot.com/ http://www.feeds.feedburner.com/Advent...
