Fossil of Earliest Flesh-Slicing Fish from the Jurassic

The fossil of a fish much like a piranha appears to be the earliest flesh-eating fish. It was found in Germany. Having teeth similar to a piranha it lived 150 million years ago. Remains of its victims were found nearby. It mainly ate the fins of fish. Evolving to consume only fins was a survival mechanism. Fish that were attacked did not die immediately. They survived to provide a meal another day. The hunter's teeth were triangular. With serrated edges, they were ideal for cutting flesh. Initially, bony fish could only bite chunks of flesh out of prey or swallow them whole. Slicing of flesh appeared much later. The hunting method of the fossilized fish was identical to modern-day piranhas. Injuries to the attacked were the same. The ancient specimen was a sea dweller. Piranhas live only in fresh water. Oddly, some piranhas are vegetarians mainly eating seeds. They are a normal food for South American people who say they taste like any other fish. It is not understood why they

Australian Government Fails To Introduce an Obesity Program

Australia is one of the fattest countries on the planet. Now, 60 percent of people are overweight. By 2025 it will increase to four out of five Aussies. The government does not care. There is no federally funded organized program to combat this. The closest the government has come is the Health Star rating system on product labeling and the Food Partnership to inform about healthy eating. There are problem with these strategies: Pepsico, Coca-Cola, Kelloggs and Nestle helped set the policies. Groups pushing for action said that the food industry should not be on the committee : consumption goods producers should be directed to change according to rational directives. Health Star is not mandatory: this was decided by big company muscle. What many want is a sugar tax. Obviously, sugary product manufacturers do not want this. They already donate millions to lobby their case with political parties. The Beverage Council is the major lobbyist against a tax on sugar. While parties ar

Fish Conservation is Failing

Conservation: Overfishing is just as toxic as pollution. G+ We are already running out of food.  If carbon dioxide doesn't kill us diminishing fish stocks will.  Soon, the humble fish and chips will cost too much for most people.  When the crunch comes the decline will be sudden over a period of five years.  It will not be possible to increase fish stocks in the medium term and some fish species will disappear forever. People must eat and in Asia in particular daily fishing is part of everyday life.  There will be little chance of a freeze on fishing.  It they are allowed to keep fishing and Western countries stop they will export to the lucrative fishing markets and nothing will change. Manufacturers like Birds Eye are alreading putting "rubbish" fish in their food products rather than the old reliable species.  When you get a fishy taste that is the second rate fish formally called baitfish.  It is so bad that major predators have fallen by 90 percent over the last

New Facility to Clone Cattle in China

China's economy is not so good lately. The booms time of the past decade will not return. However, with wages rising (though trade is moving to lower income countries) The middle class in China is growing. This means a change in diet to more meat. Add caption Australia alone cannot meet demand, so China is planning for the future itself. A new commercial cloning center is opening soon northern China. Its target is more than a million head of cattle by 2020. Very ambitious you may say, but China tends to complete what it plans. The state in China does work well with private industry. Indeed, laws are changed to make things happen. In its first year it will churn out 100,000 head, rising to one million within five years. Australian has nothing to fear. Demand will never meet growing demand. As now, Chinese will be able to order chilled prepared-to-eat meat from Australia. ◆  Biology by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Australia Funny Animal Photos Funny Weird Thing

Parsitic Wasps Transfer DNA to Lepidoptera Caterpillars

Wasps enslave caterpillars. It could be seen as a genetics accident, though it appears to be a conscious decision by Someone out there. The wasps could not survive without caterpillars. If caterpillars all died out so would wasps. Parsitic wasps lay their eggs in all types of lepidoptera caterpillars. Both insects are so close in evolutionary terms that some wasp genes are actually in caterpillars. The reason for this is that 300 million years ago there was a common ancestor of Hymenopter, the insect order to which wasps belong, and Lepidoptera caterpillars. When eggs are laid inside the caterpillars, a large bracovirus is injected which supresses the immune response of Lipidoptera, so grubs are not killed off. They hatch and eat caterpillars alive! Sometimes caterpillars survive and develop into buterflies and moths with bracovirus DNA because it was picked up from wasps before injection into caterpillars. ◆ Genetics by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Australia Funny A

Koalas Know What to Eat

Koalas may look dozy and stupid. However, they are really smart. Nature has given them a strong identification for what is good to eat. The nutritional quality of eucalyptus leaves determines the koala population in a given area. Koalas need nitrogen to make energy, though they move very slowly. Without this valuable mineral they would simply not survive. Eucalyptus trees also contain toxins, a potential death threat to the animal. Eight species of eucalyptus were tested . It was found that koalas stayed away from trees carrying toxins and were attracted to those high in nitrogen.  They obviously know what is good them.  The search for food dominates their lives. If this identification of superior food is true for koalas it must be the case for other animals. They are intrinsically guided to sources of higher quality food. Dogs for example do know which type of grass to eat to solve a health problem. It is unusual for dogs to eat grass, but sometimes they do.

The Modern Diet is Not Normal for Humans

Some scientists are condemning the "Hunter Gatherer" diet. The academics say that the consumption of carbohydrates that comes mainly from "grass" seeds, namely, wheat is normal for humans. This is absolutely incorrect. People only stopped wandering and took up crop farming 10,000 years ago. We have not had time to genetically adapt. Obesity is definitely caused by a high intake of flour from cereal and abnormal consumption of white sugar, particularly by children. Look at schoolchildren today. There isn't a skinny one amongst them. The girls have huge thighs and hardly any waist. The mind boggles just thinking about what their body weight will be when they reach their mid thirties. Only the very old today resemble people seen in the old black and white movies. Before the Second World War, people were very skinny. Mind you they did do a lot of manual labor, many working 12 hour days. If you burn a high amount of calories you can eat what you wa
