Netflix Will Open Up the Australian Market

Netflix is coming to Australia in March next year. It will ruin everything - yeah sure. At the moment Murdoch's Foxtel has a monopoly on programming and price. Customers have had to take it or leave it. Many have left, though they miss out on a lot. Now there will at least be choice. However, we are comparing apples and oranges here. Netflix will require decent broadband speed and limits. At present Australian broadband services are very poor. The National Broadband Network has just about fell over. Only prime metropolitan areas have got it. Some people have actually moved home into these areas. At first, Netflix offerings will not be great. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that soon movies will be up to date with the US. A court battle is looming between Foxtel and Netflix as the newcomer takes rights away from the big fella, and Netflix will get access to these movies! If the new Australian service is not up to par, you can still use a VPN and get ...

Scramjet Launch

Though Australia is the world's leader in development of the scramjet, it needs partners to meet the objective of successful launch. The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) led by the University of Queensland has put together a group of 13 to test the rocket. The launch will take place above the Arctic Circle in September. Preparation of the rocket has begun in Norway. There is a learning curve. A lot is expected to be learned from the project. Hypersonic physics and combustion is a relatively new area of research. The aim is to be able to launch satellites cheaper. The overall cost of the launch is $14 million, believed to be money well spent. There is no doubt that participating scientists will be nervous on day zero. The two-stage rocket will leave Andoya Rocket Range and soar to 320 kilometers. When the thrusters cease it will gently fall back to earth in a swan dive. Unfortunately, the scramjet will not be salvaged. It is set to self-destruct...

More Expensive Eggs - "End" of Battery Hens

Coles and Woolworths promise no support for battery chickens and pork grown in like manner. They say they will only purchase from "green" suppliers. Is this being good citizens on their part? Well frankly, it is not. Controlling 80 per cent of the market they have the power to force low prices on more expensive production. We will see small operations go to the wall and a future oligopoly forming. When this is finalized, like in the paint market, buyers will have to pay the price offered by the few gigantic producers. For example, Bunnings has to take prices of the few paint manufacturers. Furthermore, there is nothing to stop backyard battery operations selling at weekend markets. Legislated changes have unintended consequences. The result will be more expensive eggs. This has to be the case. Higher costs mean higher prices overall. This is economic fact. Get ready to see cardboard signs nailed to front fences of houses selling "home grown" eggs. http:...

Earliest Lifeforms Were Like Baseballs, Tennis and Soccer Balls

Earliest life on this planet looked like tennis and soccer balls. Images show round ball-like creatures. One type has the curved line around it like a tennis ball. Another has five sides shapes around its surface like a soccer ball. At first the lifeforms were believed to be giant bacteria. Currently the verdict is they are metazoan embryos. They could ultimately be found to be protists such as fungi, algae and diatoms. Though they are the earliest kind of life found, the find at this particular site in China is just by chance. Different life could have developed elsewhere. Two animals have also been found at the site that lived during the "Snowball Earth" period. One of the animals could be the first instance of a bilateral, life with a symmetrical body. China and Australia were once joined together on the supercontinent of Gondwana. Fossils in the Flinders Range of Australia also claim the "ticket" for the oldest known form of life. http://www.adventure--...
