Australia steps forward with a "television" channel dedicated to top class science programs. Major science-based organizations will contribute to content. Interviews with leading scientists will be a feature of the channel. RiAus will be free on mobiles. Australian and British program will be shown. Major universities have signed up to help as well as science organizations. There is strong demand for science programs on the Internet. It is hoped that the young will get on board. Hostworks will set up the system. It will advise scientists on how to run the channel. The new programming is aimed at educating Australians generally about science. Unfortunately, no RSS feeds are offered. Playing around with new tech devices and writing reviews full of praise is all well and good, but many people in all countries are still using dial-up modems. This brave new world is not available to them. Even for users in built up areas where ADSL2 is available, 200GB is never going to be enough to watch streaming high-definition movies. Magic dongles are wonderful for those on the main line. However, some will never be connected to this line. Netflix is being accused of using up to half of all bandwidth. This state of affairs cannot continue. The Internet will ultimately slow down. It is not a bottomless pit. There are limits. Third world countries will never put fiber in for the majority. Capital cities in all countries will probably get very fast Internet. Even in suburbs though fast speeds will never be seen. Surveys have changed the basis of testing behavior. Television in itself is not the main criterion. Because of tablets and smart phones screen time is the main target. People can use tablets while still being partially active, but it is assumed to be a passive activity. A group of 144 children was observed. Body mass index was higher for those spending most time in front of a screen. Their level of physical activity was lower. However, it was not significantly less. Something else was at work. The sedentary side of being glued to a screen overrides all other factors. Parents are being encouraged to get their children involved in sport by enrolling them in local sporting teams. Swearing is part of Australian culture. Indeed, to be accepted as truly Australian, you have to swear a lot. So it is with great surprise that Australia is bringing in a swearing ban! The furore has been caused by the airing of Gordan Ramsey's programs on televisions. In 40 minutes he did say the "f" word more than 80 times. This may be excessive. But if one goes into a public bar, particularly when there are men who have done a hard day's grueling labor, such as shearers, the "f" word will be expressed a lot. The Australian Government has made recommendations to Australian television networks advising them to review the way they set program guidelines "to stop" coarse language. Just how they are going to do this is a mystery considering Ramsey's programs are very popular, swearing or not. It is said there is a culture of crudeness. New research shows excessive watching of television is bad for your health. This is commonsense really. When you are watching TV you aren't doing anything physically. It is claimed that for every hour of TV one's lifespan is reduced by 22 minutes. Many people watch eight hours of television each day, so the calculation is, 8 hrs x 30 Years x 365 Days -------------------------------- = 3.7 years lost. 65.5 (22 minutes) x 365 Days OR, 8 hrs x 365 days 30yrs = 87600hrs total 87600 hrs x 22 mins ------------------- = 32120hrs total 60 32120 hrs --------- = 3.7 years lost 24 x 365 Just how did they reach this specific conclusion? Apparently obesity and diabetes were mentioned; then the figure was just fished out of the air. They chose a ridiculous figure of two hours of TV every day over a lifetime. Could what has happened in Egypt occur in Australia? That is Turning off the internet. It is as easy as clicking a switch. A government would just contact the main telecommunications company explain the state of emergency and the telco would turn it off. Minor internet providers would follow. A major problem for a government would be cutting off internet access of journalists. Much of their system is outside of public providers. Turn off that system and you stop government agencies talking to each other. Cutting off access for major cities would be a waste of time. Television, radio and the print media could not be stopped. CSIRO continues its groundbreaking work in broadband technology. After taking US based computer manufacturers to court to make them pay for Wi-Fi developed by CSIRO, work goes ahead on wireless broadband. The new system uses ordinary VHF antennas already on rooftops. Smithton in Tasmania is the town chosen for project testing. Terminals were set up on six farms, the furthest one being 8.2 km away from the transmitter. Phone, the Internet and video were tested. A speed of 12 megabits per second was achieved using just one TV channel. VHF channels are soon to be phased out with free to air television moving to UHF. The new broadband is very efficient. Where television had broadcast using 40 kilowatts per channel, wireless Internet worked perfectly with 3-watt.
