Roman Empire Traded With Southeast Asia

There is proof that the Roman Empire had trade links with Pangkung Paru in Bali in Southeast Asia. This is a revelation. It was thought that Rome conquered most of the known world, but knowledge of far away Asia must have been commonly known on Europe. An oval stone sarcophagus was found and it was excavated by the Bali Institute of Archaeology (BALAR). It contained the largest collection of Roman gold-glass beads. Moreover, there were also bronze mirrors from China. People did not stay in their home villages in those days. They travelled widely. Trade from Europe to far Asia blossomed on the mid 1st-millennium. However it was not thought to have happened this far back. Another four burial sites in Pangkung Paru yielded bronze artifacts, shells, gold ear pendants, and more gold-glass beads as well as Chinese bronze mirrors. A second sarcophagus had a bronze drum and artifacts draped around the individual's skull. The gold-glass beads were from the time when Rome occ...

China Sea Strategy Will Lead to War

Chinese leaders are crazy. They actually think that by sinking two U.S. aircraft carriers it will give them total control of the China Sea. It will start a war! Beijing announced its intention saying it had activated the ship killer ballistic missile system. The attack system was introduced in April 2018. China seems to be trigger happy to use it. Deployment is intended to strike vessels passing through the East and China sea. The belief that it can do this with impunity is misplaced. There will definitely be a military response. Two U.S. aircraft carriers have just passed though the disputed region. They are operating under the international rules of the sea which allows free passage of any vessel from any country needing to travel through the area. The American vessels ignored the warnings and threat of Chinese aircraft and warships sent to send them away. Trump has no patience. It seems the Chinese leadership has a patience problem as well. They will have to curb their impetuo...

The New Continent of Zealandia

There is something new in science, despite claims that everything is known.  New Zealand, like Australia (Australinea), is a continent - a very small one at that.  The scientific  powers that be  have to verify that it is the seventh continent. Professor Bruce Luyendyk named it Zealandia in 1995. Then, many claimed that Zealandia it had only three of the necessary attributes. Satellite images show that the plate is unfragmented. With all four attributes identified, Zealandia is now accepted as a valid continent. The decision will be yes. Zealandia was part of the Australia 85 million years ago. The land mass contains valuable minerals. Australia, Nova Zeelandia and Nouvelle-Calédonie will have to work out who controls specific areas. Calédonie is a French overseas territory, so France will be involved. australia zealandia continent australia continent zealandia links to australia links continent undo zealandia links australia business continent zealandia p...

Seasons and the Ocean Distort Australian Continent

The continent of Australia distorted by the seasons continents are not static. They are pliable and change shape. In Australia it is called the continental wiggle. Ocean water moves in line with the seasons. It causes measurable deformation.    distorted earth seasons summer continent The Earth is not a perfect sphere. It is lopsided. This disrupts the flow of the ocean. From April on, Australia is "pushed" to the east. This changes in October when it is pushed to the west and a bit to the north.       shape continent seasons earth winter summer distorted Continental measurement is determined by two satellites. It may be only millimeters but the Australian continent is moving. During the northern hemisphere winter, build up of snow and ice makes the Earth "top-heavy", which creates changes in the ocean.    seasons distorted summer winter The planet's center of mass moves to the South Pacific when the ice melts. Higher Carbon Dioxide Levels Makes Us Stupid

Carbon dioxide changes behavior. Higher carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could be making us stupid. Research has shown that greater concentration s of CO 2  c auses neurological impairment in fish. Sea water stores the dangerous element - the ocean has become more acidic because of its increased presence. The test subjects were Damsel fish  (Acathochromis polyacanthus) , which live in coral reefs. Half were kept in a normal atmosphere. The other half were put in an atmosphere with elevated CO 2 . Brain chemistry, blood and behavior were measured. The behavior test involved the fish choosing between entering normal sea water or going to water containing injured fish. The smell of the injured fish should have stopped the damselfish from choosing to enter that water. However, the fish exposed to higher CO 2   ignored or did not pick up the chemical warning : the injured fish didn't bother them. This is ground breaking stuff. It could show what will ha...

The Weedy Seadragon an Australian Icon

Australiana. Weedy Seadragons (phyllopteryx taeniolatus) lives only in southern Australian waters. The fish are quite large, growing to 46cm. They are redish with yellow spots and blend in with their surroundings.  Their red, sandy color does not show against the weedy background as they have green weed-like appendages. Seadragon males incubate eggs. A female puts about 200 eggs into a brooding pouch on the male during mating. The male fertilizes the eggs in his pouch. The young take two years to become mature. When seadragons die they are preserved by bony plates. These can be found washed up on beaches. Yearly rings are "recorded" in their ear bones. They live for five years. Seadragons are a barometer for climate change. It the environment deteriorates many die off. ◆ Australiana by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Tys Country Amusing Animal Photos Odd Weird Things Articles News Reviews ● Vista Computer Solutions                Au...

The Case of the Hairy Lobster

Biology: Red reef lobster caught in Western Australia. It is common knowledge that lobsters do not have hair. We all know this. However, hairy lobsters do exist and one has been caught in Western Australia. The red reef lobster is common in the waters of Madagascar, Hawaii, and African countries. Finding it off WA is a real surprise. The fisherman who caught it has never seen anything like it in his life. It seemed to be a prawn, lobster, scampi hybrid. The hairy red is much different from Australian lobsters: it has crab-like claws. Biologists do not believe that it came all the way from Africa, at least not in recent times. They hold that it has been here all along living and breeding in a localized, remote spot. The one caught probably strayed away from its locality. Obviously, its normal range must be reasonably close. Being elusive, scientists are not going on a hunt. The creature will be left alone. ◆ Biology by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Australi...

Pegasus Helicopter Flotation - Another Silly Idea?

Technology: It is surprising how people and government bodies live with a problem for decades when the answer is in front of their noses. Quite frequently rescue helicopter crash into the sea. There is usually a "ho-hum" - another helicopter has fallen from the sky. Helicopters that can take off and land in the sea have been around for years. It is old technology. Obviously rescue organizations could have used them. However, they seem to feel that it best to reinvent the wheel. They plan to modify existing helicopters. A self-inflating buoyancy balloon will be attached to standard helicopters. When a sensor detects water, automatic inflation will occur. Australian defence is throwing $4 million at the project. Marise Payne the Defence Minister is lauding it, saying "this is a fabulous innovation, by Australian minds, Australian brains, Australian workers...."  Let us hope it is not just a silly idea! ◆ Technology by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventur...

Genetic Research Done on Whale Mucus Determines Sex

Genetics: Scientists work on whales instead of cattle. Work on cattle genetics has shown the way to determine the sex of whales using a sample taken from blow holes. Specimens are composed of water and mucous membrane material.  They are collected from the sea by people in dingies, canoes and kayaks. The process involves scooping with a six-metre long carbon-fibre pole. A team of researchers has enjoyed the chance to get away from working with cattle. They have also done a genetic study of koalas. Improving cattle and meat are their priorities, however.  A few hundred samples are to be taken.  This compares to a half a million already collected from cattle. While blow hole samples are used for whales, hair is taken from cattle. Researchers have identified favourable traits for cattle from DNA. The real problem is getting these into cattle. Farmers are the ones who breed animals, not researchers. It is no surprise to find the more direct work on whales a welcom...

Sea Slug Toxin Kills Cancer

Chemistry: sea slug toxin will kill cancer cells. Sea slugs can be beautiful with their brightly colored coats. However, they carry the most toxic substances known. They display "you can't miss us" patterns because enemies try to avoid them. They eat meat. The closest thing to a vegetable that they consume are sponges. Latrunculin A. is the toxin stored in their bodies. They get this from food. Shrimps die immediately when they are attacked by sea slugs. Apparently, a sea slug will die if Latrunculin A. gets into its bloodstream. Tests show that the main sea slug toxin will kill cancer cells. It could potentially also be used to treat neurodegenerative disease. The problem is of course finding a transport medium and getting it to market. ◆   Chemistry by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Australia Funny Animal Photos Funny Weird Things Articles News Reviews ● Vista Computer Solutions Blog             ...
