The world is changing and it is in a destructive way. Long term employment is fading from sight.  Technology is destroying existing industries. The situation has never been so bad. Even now, 268,000 Australians have been retrenched. It is forecast that 40 percent of jobs will disappear over the next 15 years. companies are improving efficiency and productivity by cutting working hours. Many countries have moved to the soul destroying employment by the hour. As more work is done be "machines" labor demand declines. Global competition is causing this. Perhaps this is why tariffs are back. When the economic structure changes it impacts on political structures. There is a loop here. Culture: we buy on impulse with east credit and fast pay. We are all guilty of it. What is it? Impulse buying of course! It may not be for major purchase - we usually have a think about them before making a decision. Well most of us do. Minor things like snack bars and quick coffees are usually done on a whim. A site like eBay where thing are cheap but generally of low quality is also a vehicle for fast shopping. Some people purchase "quickie" items more than others. It all depends on ones personality. Even being out with others affects buying behavior. Having money to buy is less of a factor because easy credit is available. A person's prevailing mood also has an effect: happiness drives impulse buying. Advertising is perceived differently by individuals. "Buy one and get one free" is a trap for some. Technology: Google must pay Optus to get ads on its network. Optus in Australia is planning to block ads on its network. This is a blow to companies like Google who are trying to bring down the system by banning ad blockers from its app store. Google's actions will not change anything. Many browsers are making ad blockers a built-in feature. If companies want to advertise they will have to send a popup to users to turn off their blockers to view the site. Of course, users will move on to another site. Don't be fooled though by carriers blocking ads. Toll roads just do not pay. At least in Australia they don't. Councils and states have praised projects before they begin construction, boasting of the benefits of new toll roads. At best such schemes can only expect to break even. Drivers use it for a while with low introductory tolls. When the tolls are raised people change back to the old route. A toll is a dinner for a truck driver. Ordinary people just do not calculate the extra cost of petrol to avoid a toll road. AECOM Technology did a feasibility study for a toll road. It grossly overestimated traffic flow. In short, it knew the numbers were inflated and knew the report was full of lies.  The company said if the court challenge to them is upheld it will bankrupt the business. An outspoken man has died with little fanfare and hardly a report in the media. Yet this man spoke out about injustice in Australia all his life. His name was Arthur Murray. Australians once lived longer than people anywhere else  - the white people that is. "Blackfellas" died young and they could not even vote. Internet advertising click fraud is still widespread. Throwing money around advertising in this way is madness, anyway, A click does not mean a sale. Of course website owners are going to position "clicks" where they will be clicked on - accidentally or not. Getting in there and clicking away for half an hour won't do much harm either. Automated botnets are being set up as well. They will really get the cash flowing in from "thick-headed" advertisers. Over a decade ago it was said the end of "brochure in the post" advertising was near with the advent of the Internet. How wrong they were! The world of iPhones can be quite exciting. A 68 year old man beat up a youth who would not turn his iPhone off when a plane they were on was about to land. A phone thief was tracked down by a police helicopter in Melbourne, Australia. A victim watched a thief in the process of taking her phone on the phone's webcam. He was caught. Cooks at a Connecticut restaurant thought the gun a thief was toting looked unusual - it was an iPhone. A cyclist grabbed a woman's communication's device from her hand. He was tracked down by GPS software she was testing on the machine. As iPhones become part of everyone's life many people want one for free - human nature I suppose. They are useful devices if you want to communicate with someone. But you see people walking into electric poles on the street with a phone "glued" to their ear. The Melbourne Storm Rugby League team has been found to be giving its players money in "brown paper bags". Some of these players are being paid several million dollars a year. It is virtually impossible for a player to get such payments and not know they are illegal under the league system. As you would expect, some people involved with the club have said that payments beyond the cap limits are rife throughout the league. This is probably the case. If The Storm can have two sets of books, so can any other club. Boards of other teams have said they are reviewing club finances. If they do find something will they be honest and tell the league administrators? They have a great deal to lose if they do. To win championships rugby clubs need to retain top players each season. To do this requires a large amount of money. League administrators have identified just over $700,000 in overpayment.
