Screen Time Is the problem: Activity is Secondary for Overweight Children

Surveys have changed the basis of testing behavior. Television in itself is not the main criterion. Because of tablets and smart phones screen time is the main target. People can use tablets while still being partially active, but it is assumed to be a passive activity. A group of 144 children was observed. Body mass index was higher for those spending most time in front of a screen. Their level of physical activity was lower. However, it was not significantly less. Something else was at work. The sedentary side of being glued to a screen overrides all other factors. Parents are being encouraged to get their children involved in sport by enrolling them in local sporting teams. Though physical activity is the main trade off for more screen time, parents must understand that reducing screen time per se is most important. http://www.adventure--australia.blogspot.com/ http://www.tysaustralia.blogspot.com/ http://adventure--australia.blogspot.com/atom.xml http://

Tasmanian Glow Worms Can Tell the Time

Glow worms can tell the time. Yes it's true! An Australian researcher has found that glow worms "light up" during daylight hours, even though they are in total darkness 24 hours a day. It is only a Tasmanian species of glow worm, however. Mainland species glow day and night. It is not known how they detect that it is daylight outside the cave. It is thought that a chimney effect occurs in a cave, whereby air is "breathed" in and out from outside. This probably causes a change in temperature. Glow worms possibly use the temperature stimulus to choose when to glow and when not to glow. http://www.adventure--australia.blogspot.com/ http://www.tysaustralia.blogspot.com/ http://www.feeds.feedburner.com/AdventureAustralia http://www.technorati.com/blogs/ http://adventure--australia.blogspot.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Daylight Saving Is a Waste of Time

Daylight saving time was introduced to reduce power consumption. This is definitely not the case. Records show an increase in electricity consumption immediately after the clocks were moved forward. This is due to people knocking off work early to spend more time doing pleasurable things in the evenings - according to the experts. There is indeed a multi-million dollar opportunity cost involved. Just to change the clocks takes a great deal of time and expense. It is estimated that the average person spends ten minutes putting clocks and watches forward an hour. This can be doubled when time has to be moved back in the autumn. Worldwide, as many as 1.5 billion people practice daylight saving, whether they want to or not. It is a case of the majority being herded like sheep through a gate they do not want to go through by a minority who say we know what is good for you. The concept was strong in the days when families rallied round the dinner table then went out into the garden to play
