Ocean Dead Zones Could Cause Mass Extinction

The number of oceanic dead zones in the world is increasing. In the zones oxygen levels are too low to sustain life. It is widely know that a monster area in the south Atlantic is growing in size, but there are hundreds more smaller dead zones. They are caused by overfishing and the nutrient rich residue in fertilizer runoff. Climate change also plays a part. As oceans warm up layers form and some become stagnant with low oxygen levels. Long standing currents and wind directions have changed which has reduced layer intermixing. Since 2000 over 400 dead zones have been identified. In the 1980s there were little more than a hundred. Some are huge, more than 70,00 sq kilometers, while many are less than a square kilometer. The lack of oxygen not only causes death. Offspring are born deformed. They do not survive, or produce fewer young. Danger of a mass extinction is now very high. Dead zones are forming on continental shelves where most fishing is done. The mere presence of humans is dee...

Daylight Saving Is a Waste of Time

Daylight saving time was introduced to reduce power consumption. This is definitely not the case. Records show an increase in electricity consumption immediately after the clocks were moved forward. This is due to people knocking off work early to spend more time doing pleasurable things in the evenings - according to the experts. There is indeed a multi-million dollar opportunity cost involved. Just to change the clocks takes a great deal of time and expense. It is estimated that the average person spends ten minutes putting clocks and watches forward an hour. This can be doubled when time has to be moved back in the autumn. Worldwide, as many as 1.5 billion people practice daylight saving, whether they want to or not. It is a case of the majority being herded like sheep through a gate they do not want to go through by a minority who say we know what is good for you. The concept was strong in the days when families rallied round the dinner table then went out into the garden to play ...

Ethics as a Subject in Schools

According to the NSW government, ethics is the nearest thing to religion. There is an admission here that religion somehow dictates the mode of behavior in adulthood. In centuries past this was most definitely true. You have only to read the accounts of people who were at deaths door, like being adrift at sea in a boat, to perceive that life after death was paramount in people's thinking. Not going to hell was also important. Teaching ethics as an alternative to religious education in schools seems to be a logical option. Next year the NSW government will allow parents to choose secular ethics as a subject for their children instead of religion. Some would argue that religion does not really teach people how to behave in society. It is more important than that. Believing in God is paramount, not how one behaves toward his/her fellow Man. Behavior is secondary to being submissive to God. The problem with ethics is the supposition that there is a correct way of social interaction. St...
