Hazel Bishop's Long Lasting Lipsick

It was during the Depression. The world seemed to be coming to an end - the worst financial crisis the world had ever seen. Yet, out there, someone was thinking of the future. Hazel Bishop had a dream of setting up her own successful business. And she had ideas! The lady had to end her studies because she had no money to pay for a higher degree. Her only asset was a bachelors degree in chemistry. This was enough, however. At the time the makeup market was sown up by large companies who blocked access to newcomers. Hazel could see no barriers. She set about experimenting with different ingredients for lipstick. The old joke of a man kissing a woman then going home to his wife who could see the smear of lipstick on his face was doing the rounds - a real "found out" joke. It was common knowledge at the time that bromo acids stained the lips, the drawback being that the acid peeled the top layer of skins off. Hazel searched for an additive which would preven

Wagyu Meat Sales are Booming!

The whole world is getting richer.  Many people don't just eat beef anymore. They consumer premium quality and high priced Wagyu. It can cost as much as $200 a kilogram.  Over valued? Perhaps so.  I don't buy it.  Then I am just too ordinary to care about. It is the fastest growing breed.  With cattlemen tripping over each other to get their hands on some young ones.  It seems they are on to a good thing.  The future looks really good with growing demand.  Even meat from part bloods is fetching a solid price. Trade descriptors of Wagyu are complex.  Fifty percent with a Wagyu and another breed is termed F1.  There are grades for quarter, eights and so on.  A genome test is on its way to clearly define part Wagyu.  This will end suspect claims by some growers of their partials. Demand is greatly exceeding supply at present.  Supply will rapidly rise in the next few years, however.  It is the high price that is drawing investors in.  Corporate money is flooding in.

Genetic Treatment for Diabetes Type 2

The hope of genetic treatment may be scuttled as it is becoming known that we have good and bad genes but their behavior depends on whether they are turned on or off. Apparently this changes throughout the day let alone over the years. A new endeavor to study diabetes and diet could also be a waste of time. Even sufferers know that diabetes type 2 is caused by eating the wrong food. However, few people will change their lifestyle. A genetic predisposition could add to this. Yet, with the number of medications taken today the link between long term prescription use, genetics and food is a hard nut to crack. Including a third factor makes understanding the issue much more difficult. As always, research will be done on mice for the genetic/food duo. Unfortunately, mice may be mammals, but they ain't human. Finding a cure for diabetes 2 is way down the track. Scientists will be messing around in the lab collecting data on mice for at least 10 years. ◆ Genetics

New Eye Drops for Cataracts

The normal procedure when cataracts become problematic is surgery. This should change as new eye drops are adopted across the world. A chemical has been identified which stops the disease and reverses it. Luckily the chemical is soluble so formulation of eye drops should be easy. Cataracts develop when crystallin proteins clump together generally with age. Crystallins are the main element in the eye lens. When these proteins are damaged the lens does not function well. Using differential scanning fluorimetry, lanosteral was first found. It reduced the cumulative damage but it was not soluble and had to be injected. More work resulted in the isolation of "compound 29". This was soluble and worked just the same. The new compound stopped crystallins from forming dangerous amyloids. Furthermore, existing amyloids were dissolved. In tests on mice, their cataract affected lenses became clearer. Tissue taken from human cataract sufferers also became more transpa
