Household Robots Not Here Yet

technology Despite the advances in artificial intelligence, useful robots are a long way off. Humans can do limitless things, whereas robots can only do one thing well. They cannot have the broad perspective. So don't hope to have a "Maisy who washes the dishes and cleans the house anytime soon. Businesses want to profit from new technology. However, adapting quickly to advances in artificial intelligence is difficult. The business that shows the way will be the winner. Those who follow will have to pick up the scraps. The leading business will have moved on to something else. The time is approaching when the first damaging, even fatal, decision is made by a computer. It could be a major disaster. Artificial intelligence is not sentient: it does not feel any harm it does. Machines can now learn both good and bad. To a computer everything is equal. Give a robot a conscience - that will be a great leap forward! ◆ Technology by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Austral

Australia's Internet Snooping System is a Useless Waste of Money

On Tuesday 13th of October the Australian communications surveillance system comes into effect. Apparently, privacy will end for all Australians. Contrary to this view, I believe Australians are smart enough to opt out. There is no way the Australian government can stop the use of  VPNs, nor the resetting of a modem to Google's 8080. The government does not have jurisdiction over Google, i.e., it cannot ban it! This data, though extremely large, will always be incomplete and a waste of money. Anybody who intends to do something "underhanded" will obviously avoid the system. . Furthermore, what about Australians who have their websites on servers in other countries? This information is outside of the local loop. You can also create a site on oversees servers.  Some users will choose to do nothing and allow their information to be collected, however. Abuse of power will happen from the start. Uncontrolled bodies like the Australian Federal Police as with

Tretris Game Stops Cravings

You would think that playing a computer game and increasing general excitement would increase cravings especially for snacks. Apparently, playing Tetris has the opposite affect. Tetris, even for as little as three minutes calms the brain. The desire for food, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sex and sleep are reduced by 20 per cent. The block-shifting game takes concentrated brain power to play well. Keeping the brain "occupied" keeps distractions at bay. Contrary to the myth, women and men can only do one task at a time.  It is still surprising how sitting down and passively watching television increases appetite. The research was carried out by Queensland's QUT and Plymouth University in England. It was done for a week. Preliminary finding are positive. Work needs to be done on other games such as shoot 'em ups and role playing . Perhaps current beliefs are totally wrong. ◆ Chemistry by Ty Buchanan   ◆ Adventure Australia Funny Animal Pho

Addiction to Tech is not the Child's Fault

Keeping children away from technology is impossible. Like eating sugary food and going to bed early, those days have long gone. We know computers change the brain structure of children, Humans are changing and becoming a different species. Whether we will survive another climatic challenge is unknown. If children are denied access to the mobile phone or tablet they literally spit the dummy. You have a huge blow up on your hands. They are addicted to games that give them instance satisfaction. Developers know how to keep players "attached" to their devices. Like food and entertainment, technology is the demon, not children themselves. Parents need to start with a set behavior pattern soon after a child is born. However, try to take devices away when he/she first goes to kindergarten and sees other kids attached to tech on their way to and from the center - good luck! You don't see children playing outdoors much these days, Not like " when I was

The Stress of Commuting

Yes we know! You are fed up with work and travelling to work. Just getting there and back is tedious and boring, let alone tiring. You can't wait to get home for that wholesome dinner and a chance to put your feet up. A study has begun to examine the stress of commuting at the Australian National University. Dr David Russel is leading the CommutingLIFE project. Commuters are being interviewed as well as politicians and policymakers.   Observation of those enduring the daily chore is also taking place. Getting to work is particularly stressful. Public transport engenders distrust, fear and depression. Having to let others into our safety zone is very disturbing. Aggressive drivers put safe ones in a bad mood. Most of all, the loss of valuable time is heartfelt. Even staying at home and working on the Internet has its problems: ties with coworkers are weakened. It seems those who talk about commuting are healthier, even if it is to complain about the ordeal.

Microsoft Intentionally Slows Windows 7 Computer Shutdown

Microsoft intentionally slows the shutdown of Windows 7 via updates to force consumers onto Windows 8 and 10. Have you noticed that your once speedy Windows 7 shutdown has slowed to as much as 10 minutes on some computers? Microsoft MS-DOS Dross A secret campaign has been launched by Microsoft to increase its market share of computer operating systems - specifically the latest ones. There is going to be a clamp down on old systems. Support has already been discontinued for XP. Plans are afoot to drop Windows 7. Again, Microsoft fails to understand its consumer market. The market is saturated with Windows 7. Users know a good operating system when they see one and will not let go!  Third party support of Windows 7 is possible as users could be willing to pay for it. They are fed up with Microsoft's lose one win one OS launches. Windows 8 has been a failure. Users are suspicious of Windows 10. A majority of testers say Windows 10 is not ready to be released. Professional Photography Dies

Like many other professions, professional photography has died due to the Internet. If a person at a party tells you he is a professional photographer, you put him in the same group as journalists and consultants : you quietly whisper in your wife's ear that the bloke over there is unemployed. If you patent a new mousetrap and you say you have given it away, you will not get a patent because it is has become public knowledge and someone is already using the concept. Like photography, just about everyone is taking and freely distributing photos. A so-called professional photographer who shows his work online is really doing the same thing as the person trying to patent an idea. Even if the photographer blocks a direct save to a computer by website coding, users can easily snap the picture in all its high definition glory. To expect payment is naive with the Internet as it is. Professional photographers will not retire wealthy. They will not get sufficient income t
