CSIRO continues its groundbreaking work in broadband technology. After taking US based computer manufacturers to court to make them pay for Wi-Fi developed by CSIRO, work goes ahead on wireless broadband. The new system uses ordinary VHF antennas already on rooftops. Smithton in Tasmania is the town chosen for project testing. Terminals were set up on six farms, the furthest one being 8.2 km away from the transmitter. Phone, the Internet and video were tested. A speed of 12 megabits per second was achieved using just one TV channel. VHF channels are soon to be phased out with free to air television moving to UHF. The new broadband is very efficient. Where television had broadcast using 40 kilowatts per channel, wireless Internet worked perfectly with 3-watt. The technique of "beamforming" was used: multi-user input and spacial division multiplexing output. Work still has to be done to improve downloading capability. I don't know about other countries but here in Australia there is a silly law that says you can ride a scooter on a normal motor vehicle driving licence. I believe that this is also the case in other English speaking countries - let me know. It is true that motor cycles are different monsters than cars. A quite different drivers technique is involved. It is said that many people could not handle a motorcycle and sidecar, for example, because steering it around corners needs some natural skill that one is born with. Surely if one can ride a scooter, 60cc motorcycles should also be included. The engines are powerful enough to give a good ride to a large person over hill and dale. Years ago there was a "chink" in British law which allowed people to drive a three wheeled vehicle on a motorcycle licence. Some took offence at this and set many three wheelers alight in car parks. An Indonesian island is home to fossils of a giant stork. This is the little island where the tiny humanoid hobbit was found. It is a wonderful place for exploration and scientific discovery. Animals who lived there range from dwarf elephants to giant lizards and rats. The giant stork lived on the island at about the same time Aboriginals populated Australia. A leg bone shows the 6 feet tall bird was a marabou stork weighing about 16 kilograms. It couldn't fly. Bones were found in the Liang Bua cave where skeletons of the hobbit were found. These creature got to the island then became cut off from mainstream evolution. The island has never been joined to the primary landmass. Findings prove that the "island rule" is valid.
