IPhone Action

The world of iPhones can be quite exciting. A 68 year old man beat up a youth who would not turn his iPhone off when a plane they were on was about to land. A phone thief was tracked down by a police helicopter in Melbourne, Australia. A victim watched a thief in the process of taking her phone on the phone's webcam. He was caught. Cooks at a Connecticut restaurant thought the gun a thief was toting looked unusual - it was an iPhone. A cyclist grabbed a woman's communication's device from her hand. He was tracked down by GPS software she was testing on the machine. As iPhones become part of everyone's life many people want one for free - human nature I suppose. They are useful devices if you want to communicate with someone. But you see people walking into electric poles on the street with a phone "glued" to their ear. Many are seriously injured every year by drivers of motor vehicles blatantly using them while driving. They are really a toy. High t

New Medical Treatments Take Forever to Perfect

Major medical advances are a long time coming. Development of a reliable blood sugar level monitoring method for type 1 diabetes is a case in point. It has been claimed as a revolutionary achievement. It consists of a monitor connected to an insulin pump. With all the money being poured into research this should have been done years ago. Heart surgery hasn't moved much further forward than the first transplant in South Africa decades ago. Stents are still the primary treatment. The number of heart transplant recipients remains very small indeed. Artificial hearts are still not safe enough for general use. Cancer shrinking techniques have been identified but they have not been perfected. DNA treatment is a long way down the track. Much hope had been raise over stem cell research. This has slowed right down. Surgical "tricks' have been done in one-off procedures. Getting them into general hospital systems is not happening though. Drug companies are pushing very expensive med

The Days of the US Dollar as World Currency Are Numbered

With the US printing paper dollars by the truckload the American currency cannot remain the world's gold standard. Can something akin to gold be created to act as the measure of value for world trade? China's call for a new stand alone currency for international trade will not work. The difficulties of the Euro has highlighted this. Putting the world's "strong" currencies in a pot with gold then calculating out a value for transactions is also problematical. Wouldn't this be a partial return to the gold standard? The gold standard worked for a long time mainly because is was a scarce commodity and new finds of the mineral were increasing the gold "pot" at about the same rate as the world growth in trade. A new gold standard would probably not work now because there would be a rush to invest in gold companies which could flood the market. This would not solve the problem of nations openly trying to weaken their currency to gain a market edge. Quantita
